A recipe website for amateurs

Cookies is a website that provides recipes and cooking ideas for users. It can also help users calculate portions, find ingredients alternatives, and convert measuring units. This website targets amateurs who love to cook.

USER RESEARCH

Primary target audience

o   Cooking skills: Amateur, cook at least 4-5 days a week, can cook without a recipe
o   Age: 25-40
o   Income: 70k - 100k per year
o   Occupation: working professional who has time to cook

Secondary target audience

o   Cooking skills: Only cooks when they need, don't have time to cook, cannot cook without a recipe
o   Age: 18-27
o   Income: 30k - 80k per year
o   Occupation: student, and working professional who doesn’t have time to cook

Outline

This test will ask participants to look at each wireframe and give feedback on the layout.

Procedure

  1. Give participants to see all the pages

  2. Participants comments on each page and the tester collect the feedback

  3. Analysis

Results

Layout & design

  • Overall - Users like the round shape because it looks smarter. Make sure all elements are consistent

  • Overall - too busy and need more space between each item​

Content

  • Recipe page - Since the website also targets users who are not good at cooking, more photo explanation on each step should be added

  • Pop-up window - Since the unit converter and ingredient alternatives finders are not common, some more explanation will be needed on the tool.

  • Recipe page - should add more general information including cook time and difficulty

​Navigation

  • Overall - Breadcrumbs should be added on each page to indicate the user’s location

Function

  • Overall - Can add the save button on all items

ITERATIONS

Lo-fi prototype

Outline

This test will assign 3 tasks to the participants. The tester will count the time spent on finishing the tasks and observe where do they look at.  Participants will give general feedback after using the product.

Procedure

  1. Task 1 - find a recipe from the hamburger menu

  2. Task 2 - save a recipe and find the recipe from the saved list

  3. Task 3 - demonstrate how to convert a measuring unit

  4. User’s feedback

Layout & design

  • For the slide, the left and right arrows should be put next to the slide, instead of on the title

  • The tools box should be more obvious

Content

  • The symbols of the tools box, including the unit converter and ingredient alternatives finder should be more clear

Function

  • Need to allow user to unsaved the recipe
